1. neko case - middle cyclone-
absolutely beautiful, through and through. neko's golden pipes
resonate in her always-thought-provoking and endearing manner, and she
doesn't shy away from her morbid side - the side i truly adore. every
song is gorgeously composed, sung and the lyrics are brilliant. i'm a
total lesbian for neko case.
2. yo la tengo - popular songs-
arguably one of my favorite yo la tengo albums EVAR. every song sounds
different, but nonetheless YLT. from long, ambient-esque, noise
sessions in 13-minute songs to short and sweet love ballads, i've
fallen head over heels for 'popular songs.' and because i'm
impaitient, i ordered the album from itunes and got the bonus track, a
cover of 'you've got a friend;' this album just doesn't stop getting
awesome.
3. gringo star - all yall-
my favorite part of atlanta barely spends any time there. gringo star
tour nationally and internationally almost all year long, but they've
managed to make one of the best albums i own - period. 'all yall'
combines your '60s pop with a contemporary rock'n'roll aestheitc that
makes this band equally pheonmenal to see live or to listen to on
record. this album is an audible addiction.
4. wilco - wilco (the album)-
a big step up from 'sky blue sky,' 'wilco (the album),' reminds all
wilco fans to hold on tightly to the allmighty tweedy; there is still
hope! tracks that seemingly combine several vibes from albums past
(ie. 'bull black nova' = a ghost is born + being there), as well as
tracks that stand perfectly on their own, as belonging none other but
this album (ie. 'wilco (the song)'), this valiant effort reinforces
the great consistenecy in wilco's rock'n'roll genius.
5. the swimmers - people are soft-
i am a sucker for lead vocalist of the swimmers, steve yutzy-burkey,
and his dreamy voice. it only makes sense that this synth-heavy,
semi-experimental work balances out their first album, 'fighting
trees,' which was super-happy-pop, quite nicely. i could listen to
this band all day.
6. irm - charlotte gainsbourg-
if only for 'heaven can wait,' gainsbourg's song featuring beck, this
album is solid gold. if only for the fact that the music video for
'heaven can wait' is ridiculously brilliant, this album is solid gold.
i am obsessed.
7. i told you i was freaky - flight of the conchords-
in a year of such shit, it's nice to laugh. ringing in the final
season of the hbo series, 'flight of the conchords,' their final
album, which actually came out piecemeal after every new episode's
debut, some of the songs on this album far surpass those of the first.
there is even one track, 'carol brown,' that is so sweet, charming and
sincere, it could get radio airplay and probably be the next 'my
girl.' it's good for a laugh, true, but it's good on its own, too. we
call that a 'win-win.'
8. wolfgang amadeus - pheonix-
as some waited with bated breath for the new vampire weekend, others
decided they could really care less and took stock in pheonix. this
band blew up extremely fast, and with good reason. it's catchy, poppy,
fast and perfect to dance to. almost no one can deny that they enjoy
almost all of the 'wolfgang amadeus' songs, especially the single
'1901.'
9. fever ray - fever ray-
the knife had a huge,mainstream hit, and from that bred the eery,
creepy and artful fever ray. the sound is almost demonic, you know,
but in a good way.
10. edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros - up from below-
the majority of this album is pretty bad. there are like four songs on
it that i enjoy listening to. but i enjoy listening to them THAT much.
'home' is the song that is making this band known, and it's the only
one of its kind on 'up from below.' rate this album only based off its
stellar tracks and maybe we can convince these fuckers to quit the
shitty van morrison-style singing and stick to the pop-folk that
they've apparently already mastered. |
